Types of Hearing Aids

Hearing aids help people with hearing issues hear better. Poor hearing has a severe impact on one's quality of life. It prevents the affected person from partaking in social activities and becoming actively involved in conversations. Hearing aid devices come in a number of types and styles.

How do hearing aids work?

Hearing aids are electronic devices that amplify sound so that people can hear better. Each hearing aid consists of a microphone, amplifier, speaker and a battery. The microphone converts sound waves into electrical signals. The amplifier then amplifies (increases) this signal then transmits it to the ear through the speaker.

Types of Hearing Aids

Behind The Ear (BTE) hearing aids — These consist of a plastic case placed behind the ear which is linked to a plastic mould fixed inside the outer ear. These are known as "behind the ear" as the parts are located in a case behind the ear. These parts are what allow the hearing aid to perform its function.

In the ear (ITE) hearing aids — These are located in the outer ear and are usually used for mild hearing loss. These hearing aids also come with additional features such as telecoils, that make it possible for the user to hear sound through the circuit of the hearing aid instead of the microphone. This offers multiple advantages, one of which is that it allows users to hear conversations much more clearly when talking through the phone.

Cost of hearing aids

Although hearing aids are costly, the Australian Government does offer some people free hearing assessments and hearing aids. Once a person goes through a hearing test they will be advised with regards to hearings aids, and they can then apply for the Government program to check their eligibility.

Questions to ask

Before purchasing a hearing aid there are several questions that one should ask, these include:

  • Type of hearing loss — You should know whether your hearing loss is mild or severe. They can then ask their hearing aid provider which type of hearing aid is best for their needs.
  • Warranty — Hearing aids can be easily damaged, so it is always important to ask about the warranty. This warranty may cover future repair and costs.
  • Total cost — You should be sure of the total cost of the hearing aid so that there are no surprises.

Above all, it is imperative that you speak to a hearing specialist before choosing a hearing aid.
